West Ryde is a suburb of Sydney in Australia , 16 km northwest of downtown Sydney. It belongs to the Local Government Area Ryde City and is part of the northern suburbs of Sydney.

Ryde , North Ryde, and East Ryde are neighboring suburbs. Denistone , Denistone West , Meadowbank, and Melrose Park have the same zip code as West Ryde at 2114.

history

West Ryde was an extension of Ryde named after the Ryde Store , a GM Pope retail store . He named his business after his birthplace Ryde on the Isle of Wight .

economy

In West Ryde there is a shopping center near the train station and the Sydney Water Station , which supplies drinking water to most of northern Sydney.

West Ryde Marketplace is a medium-sized mall with a Woolworths supermarket, various stores and the West Ryde Library . Since the new mall opened in 2005, it has drawn crowds from the aging Top Ryde Shopping Center in Ryde, which eventually closed and is now being renovated.

traffic

The station is on Sydney's CityRail Northern Line . There is a bus station next to the train station, which is served by lines 501, 520, 523, 524, 534 and 543.

building

West Ryde has a number of historic structures such as B. the Addison , the second oldest surviving building in Australia. The residential buildings in the suburb are predominantly single houses built on ¼ acre (1011 m²) plots in a cross-section of Australian architectural styles, such as: B. Federation -Houses (1890-1920), Californian bungalows (wooden, 1910-1939), houses dating back to the Great Depression of form boards or chipboard with corrugated iron roofs, and brick buildings from the 1960s. There are also several brick-built apartment houses from the Askin era on paved ½ acre (2022 m²) plots.

West Ryde used to be a working-class suburb with many factories, especially towards the Meadowbank . These old factories are gradually being demolished, and apartment blocks will be built in their place, overlooking the Parramatta River and the Olympic site. So the suburb is gradually getting a richer population.
