Ryde

Ryde is a suburb of Sydney in Australia . Which is 13 km northwest of Sydney city center and 8 km east of the city of Parramatta . Ryde is the administrative center of the Local Government Area Ryde City and is one of the northern suburbs of Sydney. It is on the north bank of the Parramatta River .

history

Ryde was named after the town of Ryde on the Isle of Wight in Great Britain . The name was probably given by GM Pope , who immigrated from the Isle of Wight, settled in the area and opened the "Ryde Store".

Ryde is the third oldest European settlement in Australia after Sydney and Parramatta. Originally the area was given the Aboriginal name Wallumetta , but then the whole area between the Paramatta River and Lane Cove River was called the Field of Mars . The name Ryde was used from the 1840s and in 1870 it was adopted for the city. The suburb has the oldest settler farm in Australia, Addington on Victoria Road. Addington was built by the pardoned convict James Stewart around 1800. James Shepherd bought the property in 1810 and added another six-room house to the original sandstone house.

Other old buildings in the area include the Police Station on Victoria Road and the Willandra House on Willandra Street. The police station, a simple sandstone house, was designed by an architect of the colony, Mortimer Lewis (1796–1879), and completed in 1837. Willandra is a two story organic house built by the Devlin family approximately 1845 . In later times it served as the art gallery and headquarters of the Ryde and District Historical Society . Both Willandra and the Police Station are listed on the Australian Register of National Monuments.

Around 1900, the famous river boat captain Robert Gascoigne lived in the settler farm Riversdale on Wade Street .

Since Ryde is on a hill, it was also called Top Ryde . The Ryde Swimming Center was demolished and rebuilt as the Ryde Aquatic Leisure Center . Competitions from the 2000 Olympic Games were held there.

Trams

Most trams in Sydney drove from Fort Macquarie and the Circular Quay , the George Street down to Broadway and Parramatta Road . At peak times, trams also left the station square.

The lines to Drummoyne and Ryde started from Rozelle Tram Depot . After leaving the depot, the tram drove along Crescent Road and Commercial Road (today: City West Link ) in Glebe and turned left onto Victoria Road . Then they crossed the Iron Cove Bridge and the former Gladesville Bridge , then turned right onto Blaxland Road . Then they drove down Blaxland Road past the current seat of the City Council and finally arrived at the intersection of Pope and Devlin Streets in Ryde.
