Meadowbank

Meadowbank is a suburb of Sydney in Australia , 15 km west of Sydney city center. It belongs to the Local Government Area Ryde City and is one of the northern suburbs of Sydney. Meadowbank lies in a valley on the north bank of the Parramatta River .

history

Aboriginal culture

The area from Sydney Cove to Parramatta on the north bank of the Parramatta River was believed to be that of the Wallumedegal and had the Aboriginal name Wallumetta - territory of the people of Wallumedes.

The Aborigines in the Sydney area were clans with larger groups who spoke the same language. They were divided into three language groups - the Kuringgai (or Guringai ), the Dharug (or Dharruk / Dharuk / Darug ) and the Dharawal (or Tharawal ). The Wallumedegal probably spoke Dharug.

The land in the area of the Field of Mars , which was given to the doctor William Balmain in 1794 , was named Meadow Bank . Balmain returned to England in 1801 and left his lands to the management of his professional colleague D'Arcy Wentworth . Wentworth agreed to sell the land to John Bennett , an ex-inmate who was brought to Australia in 1795. From 1819 both the Meadow Bank Estate and the Chatham Farm to the north belonged to Bennett. Bennett's nephew, William Bennett, joined in 1823 . John Bennett, who was never married, died in July 1829 and so his nephew inherited the property and built Meadowbank House around 1835 . In 1855 Bennett sold the Chatham Farm to Major Edward Darvall . William Bennett died in 1865, but his widow stayed at Meadowbank until her death in 1879. In the late 1880s, when the Strathfield - Hornsby railroad opened in 1886, the property was divided. The local train station was initially called Hellenic , but was later renamed Meadowbank .

economy

John Witton Bridge

Meadowbank is a mixed-use residential and commercial area. There are a few shops around the station and a shopping mall in the apartment complex to the south on Bay Drive.

Meadowbank is currently undergoing an urban renewal program that will demolish many factories and replace them with apartment blocks overlooking the Parramatta River.

traffic

Meadowbank Railway Station

Meadowbank is on the Sydney bus, rail and ferry network. The major roads lead around the suburbs rather than through them, resulting in too little traffic in the residential streets. Lane Cove Road runs to the east, Victoria Road to the north and Adelaide Street to the west of Meadowbank. Other major streets include Constitution Road, Meadow Crescent, and Bank Street.

The station is on the Northern Line of the CityRail network and has two external platforms. Two trains per hour run to the station in each direction. Additional trains are used during rush hour.

The ferry from Parramatta to Sydney is a short distance from the train station. The nearest pier to the west is Sydney Olympic Park , to the east Kissing Point . The ferry mostly transports tourists to Sydney city center on weekends and professionals on weekdays. Because of the shallow water in the Parramatta River, especially during low tide, catamarans are used as ferries.

  • Meadowbank TAFE , a school center, is east of the train station.
  • St. Michael's School is a Catholic elementary school founded in 1922 by the Sisters of Mercy .
