Stian Westerhus (born April 2, 1979 in Steinkjer , Norway ) is a Norwegian experimental guitarist. He became known as a member of the band Puma and through his collaboration with Nils Petter Molvær .

He first studied jazz at Middlesex University in Great Britain ( Bachelor ), later at the Jazz Academy in Trondheim .

His career began in the experimental rock band Puma , with whom he recorded several albums. In 2009, Rune Grammofon released his solo debut Galore , and a year later the much-acclaimed Pitch Black Star Spangled . Also in 2010 he played on Jaga Jazzists One-Armed Bandit , in 2011 on Nils Petter Molvær's Baboon Moon . Since 2010 he has been collaborating regularly with the Norwegian singer Sidsel Endresen . The duo was awarded the Spellemann Prize in 2012 for their debut album Didymoi Dreams . Westerhus also appeared as a guest on Ulver albums and gave concerts with Supersilent . At Moldejazz 2011 he performed with the Trondheim Jazz Orchestra, they performed Westerhus' piece Ripples, Raptures and Disbelief . In 2013 he had a live session on the BBC .

He is known for his experimental, "raw" style of play with a high use of electronic elements; it cannot be clearly assigned to a genre. He played in jazz contexts with Molvær and Jaga Jazzist, experimental improvisation music with Sidsel Endresen and on his solo albums, metal as Monolithic with Kenneth Kapstad from Motorpsycho and experimental rock with Puma and Ulver. He mentions Jimi Hendrix , Mike Oldfield and King Crimson as important early influences .
