Who Killed Johnny is a Swiss comedy film from the director Yangzom Brauen from 2013 .

action

The first shot shows Melanie brewing espresso in her kitchen at six o'clock in the morning ; a scene that will be repeated several times in the film. Her supposed boyfriend tries to get into the apartment without a sound, after which there is a solid argument because of his infidelity and Melanie is stabbed by him in the kitchen.

Melanie lives in Los Angeles and tries to write the script for a film in her living room with her childhood friend Alex, who is also from Zurich. Both are Swiss abroad living in Los Angeles who dream of a career in the film business. The two seem to agree only on the aforementioned opening scene of the planned film and the male leading actor, but not on the further plot, whether it should be a comedy, a tragedy, a horror film or a thriller. All day long, they ponder the script and are interrupted by two of their neighbors, Jambo and his girlfriend Gudrun, when they want to have fun in Melanie's pool in the garden. When Alex was fascinated by the activity of the two, especially of Gudrun, in the pool during a work break, he developed the script further in his mind, also Melanie in the living room, where she was thinking about her bizarre friends, who also came from Switzerland To make Los Angeles the protagonists of the film. Neither of them notice that the brownies Jambo brought with them were not intended for the hosts, as they contain hashish and, together with the wine they consumed, stimulate the fantasy of the script shown by Alex and Melanie in the film immensely.

In a later scene from the balcony they discover a man lying on the street floor who appears to be the victim of a car accident. Jambo wants to help him, Gudrun and Max hesitate, Melanie says no, so as not to deal with the police: All four are foreigners in the USA, Gudrun and Jambo come from Germany, Jambo is illegal in the USA, and three of them are also Colored , as Melanie argues with them after Jambo has brought the supposedly dead person into Melanie's apartment. Now in a panic, think about how to 'get rid of' the dead person. Before they can do this, the four realize that, in their opinion, the dead man is undoubtedly Johnny Depp ...

They use this 'stroke of luck' amateurishly to let the alleged star take part in excerpts from their film - love scenes with Gudrun and Melanie, a scene with Melanie in a car based on Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas . They are interrupted by a police officer who asks at the front door about witnesses of a suspected hit- and-run and the whereabouts of the victim, by Alex's hashish dealer and by Hasso, who, like their other friends, burst into their apartment unannounced. Melanie wants to 'get rid of' the dead person and Alex finds a cleaner who can get the supposed corpse out of the house. A short scene shows how the plastic bag used for this moves, the invisible cleaner says , “ You should actually be dead ” and hits his victim with a club.

Three months later, the first scene of the film is finally shot, with the participation of Melanie (script, flap), Alex (director), Jambo (sound), three other friends for camera, script and mask as well as Gudrun as the female lead and Carlos Leal in the male lead. As Carlos worries about his motivation and especially his uncomfortable role as a villain, there are delays and increasing disputes between him as a 'professional' and Gudrun as a 'amateur actress', so that the eighth take ends in a catastrophe - the film crew is enthusiastic of the attitude, but only now notices that Gudrun was actually stabbed to death by Marcel in the affect ...

In the final shot of the film, the fictional Swiss TV station CH1 reports on its news program that Carlos Leal, actor and former member of Sens Unik , was arrested in Los Angeles for manslaughter , and Melanie Winiger and Alex Loong were also taken into custody. Mention is made of a possible connection with the unexplained death of a Johnny Depp doppelganger three months ago .

Reviews

“Who Killed Johnny is a remarkable achievement in guerrilla filmmaking by a group of established Swiss stars who produced a Swiss comedy with great enthusiasm and without pay that breaks many conventions. Yangzom Brauen and her team, consisting mainly of women (Alexa Ihrt as Director of Photography, Barbara Landi as editor and Shari Yantra Marcacci as producer), have given Swiss comedy an upgrade that it has long deserved. "

“The directorial debut of Yangzom Brauen turns out to be a killer at the box office. Nobody wants "Who killed Johnny?" see, the low-budget film (around 40,000 francs) penned by the Swiss is pretty good. Solid direction, funny scenes, great editing, terrific film music and actors who play themselves with great conviction. "

“For many, an acting career in Hollywood is still considered the ultimate. But the chances are slim. Nevertheless, a couple of bold confederates try to gain a foothold in the dream factory. Melanie Winiger and Carlos Leal poke fun at their tireless struggle for good roles and scripts in the crazy low-price comedy “Who Killed Johnny”. That sounds promising."

Only 600 viewers attended the cinema release in Zurich , 300 of whom were premiere guests. " Swiss films simply have a hard time with their home audience ," as well as the Zürifäscht held at the same time and the midsummer weather , cited the film distributor Jonas Frei von Moviebiz as reasons. The director Yangzom Brauen « had not expected otherwise. I'm proud that we made it to the cinema with our film. »A sequel is already planned, because« the audience numbers were never decisive whether we would continue or not. A continuation is only dependent on the financing ». It was broadcast on television for the first time on December 5 and 9, 2013 on the Swiss private broadcaster S1 .
