Wie Brüder im Wind is an Austrian film drama from 2016. Directed by Gerardo Olivares and Otmar Penker. The film started on January 28, 2016 in Germany and on January 29, 2016 in Austria.

action

Lukas lives with his father in the Austrian mountains. Indirectly in debt through Luke, his mother Maria died; since then he has not spoken any more. His father compensates for the loss with a gruff manner with which he moves away from his son.

When Lukas finds an eagle that has been pushed out of its nest, he decides to raise it - secretly because the father pursues the eagles as predators of his sheep. Lukas baptizes the eagle with the name Abel and has thus found a friend and companion who gives him the affection that his father denies him. Gradually he begins to speak again and receives support from forester Danzer in raising the animals. He shows Lukas how to feed the eagle properly and teach it to fly.

Luke realizes, however, that Abel will sooner or later be drawn back into the wilderness. When Abel flies to freedom, Lukas misses him so much that he goes in search of Abel.

production

background

The foundation for the film project was laid by the two filmmakers Otmar Penker (Prince of the Alps) and Gerald Salmina ( Mount St. Elias ) with the idea of applying their experiences in the animal film sector to a fictional story. Penker did the nature shots, and Olivares the fictional shots. Walter Köhler , CEO of Terra Mater Factual Studios, found himself a producer with many years of experience in nature documentary films.

Filming

The film was shot in the Austrian Tyrol and Carinthia as well as the Italian South Tyrol . In order to have enough time for the extensive filming in the Alps, the nature and animal shots began in 2011, when there was still no finished script. For this purpose, a small team shot, sometimes under the most difficult logistical conditions, in the alpine terrain of the Hohe Tauern National Park . The fictional part of the shooting was divided into three shooting blocks and ended in February 2015. In order to live up to the claim to show unprecedented animal photos, they worked closely with Paul Klima (Falkenhof Lenggries), Franz Schüttelkopf and other falconers from the Adlerarena Burg Landskron . The eagles were accustomed to helicopters and ultralight trikes so that they could be followed up close during their flights. In addition, a high-resolution miniature camera was developed in cooperation with the Fraunhofer Research Institute , which enabled recordings from the perspective of the eagle.

occupation

Manuel Camacho was brought into the project by Olivares for the lead role. Both had already worked closely together on the film Wolf Brothers . The role of forester Danzer, who also acts as the narrator in the film, was tailored to Jean Reno . The role of the father cellar was filled with Tobias Moretti , who shortly before had played a similar antagonist role in The Dark Valley .

The adult eagle was represented by the golden eagle Sky from Falkenhof Lenggries . The golden eagle Alexander the Great from the Landskron Eagle Arena also played in this role.
