The village of Wiechs and the hamlet of Schoren belong to Wiechs .

history

Prehistoric and early historical settlement can be proven by finds from the Late Bronze Age (around 1300 - 800 BC). In addition, a Roman road built in the 3rd century AD can still be seen in the “Schachenwies” and “Krautgarten” tubs . Coming from Eschenz - Stein am Rhein it led via Friedingen , Maiershöfe and Wiechs to Orsingen .

Wiechs was first mentioned in a document in 1277, when the Bishop of Bamberg enfeoffed King Rudolf I of Habsburg with Wiechs, who left the place to the Count of Mangold von Nellenburg . The tower castle at Wiechs was built around 1100. In 1499 the nellenburgische Wiechs was in Swiss War sacked by the Confederates and burned. In Wiechs, the Lords of Homburg and the Lords of Bodmann zu Wiechs were wealthy.

In 1565 Hans Conrad von Bodman bought the castle, the tower and half of the village of Wiechs from his father-in-law Wolf von Homburg. After Wolf von Homburg's death in 1566, Hans Conrad von Bodman inherited a further share in Wiechs. He bought the rest of it in 1566, from then on he was the sole owner of the Wiechs manor. The Lords of Bodman remained in possession of the place until the second half of the 18th century. Wiechs was part of Württemberg from 1806 to 1810, and from 1810 was part of Baden (Stockach office). On July 1, 1972, the previously independent community of Wiechs in the Stockach district was incorporated into the community of Steißlingen after incorporation had failed in 1935 due to resistance from both communities.

Population development

The district of Wiechs had 173 inhabitants on December 31, 2013 according to town hall statistics.

coat of arms

The coat of arms of the former municipality of Wiechs shows in red a golden bordered black sloping bar, each accompanied by an eight-spoke golden wheel. The proposal of the Badisches Generallandesarchiv in Karlsruhe, which was accepted by the municipality in 1899, is a combination of the coat of arms of the von Roll family only a few years ruled Wiechs. The vernacular associated the wheels with the Wiechser handicraft; the sloping beam is intended to remind of the peat cutting in the nearby reed.
