The Wiedener Elisabethkirche is a free-standing church on St.-Elisabeth-Platz in the 4th district of Wieden in Vienna . The Roman Catholic parish church was consecrated to St. Elisabeth in 1868 and has been the parish church of the newly established "Parish for the Good News" since January 1st, 2017. She belongs to the City Deanery 4/5 in the Vicariate Vienna City of the Archdiocese of Vienna . The church is a listed building .

history

By a decree of the Ministry of Culture of April 10, 1857, the new church was ordered, which was to be financed from the funds of the Religious Fund. The church was planned by the architect Hermann von Bergmann . In March 1859 he presented the plans and was entrusted with the completion by the end of 1862. However, this schedule could not be kept. It was not until 1866, the day before Empress Elisabeth's name day on November 18, that the new parish church on the Wieden was solemnly consecrated. The actual consecration finally took place two years later on October 8, 1868. After 1945 the vault and the altars were restored.

On January 1, 2017, the parish of St. Elisabeth - and thus also the St. Elisabeth Church - was incorporated into the newly established parish of the Good News as one of four parishes (alongside St. Florian , St. Thekla and Wieden-Paulaner ) .

architecture

The church, located in the middle of St.-Elisabeth-Platz and thus also in the middle of the so-called Karolinenviertel, is in the line of sight of the rising Argentinierstraße. The neo-Gothic staggered church with north-south oriented nave, transept and a polygonal choir in the south has a tower set into the north and at the same time main facade facing Argentinierstraße. He is 74 meters high. The keel-arched, crab-studded main portal shows the “Seven Works of Bodily Mercy” in the tympanum in three stone reliefs by the sculptor Rudolf Zafouk. The seventh work of mercy - “Food for the hungry” - is embodied by St. Elisabeth on the central pillar, she holds both roses ("rose miracle") and a loaf of bread in her hands. The massive stone crucifix directly in front of the round window of the western transept and the depiction of the Mother of Sorrows underneath come from the sculptor Johann Feßler . Franz Melnitzky made the two reliefs "Birth of Christ" and "Christ on the Mount of Olives" on the facade of the nave of St. Elisabeth Church.

Furnishing

The neo-Gothic church furnishings come from the construction period. The nine-meter high, neo-Gothic high altar is made of oak, richly carved and completely gilded. Like the entire interior, it was designed by the architect Josef Lippert. The altarpiece St. Elisabeth is by the painter Franz Josef Dobiaschofsky from 1866. The painting shows the so-called rose miracle , in which the bread turns into roses - the carved roses in the frame of the high altar picture refer to it. In the course of a first renovation in 1902, the round pictures in the choir (in wax technique) by the painter Ludwig Mayer were added. Years earlier, the same artist had frescoed the chapel (now weekday chapel), which was designed as a baptistery. In the lunettes of the chapel are the depictions of “Baptism of Christ”, “Noah's Sacrifice” and “Deluge”, dated 1867. The goldsmith Ernst Grandegger made the modern tabernacle and the cross with the enameled ends for the newly designed weekday chapel (1984). The two side altars contain altar paintings by Josef Kessler (dated 1866). The left side altar shows Mary, the right side altar a depiction of the Sacred Heart. In the medieval tradition, the painter used an ornamented gold background, painted on wood.

organ

The consecration of the first organ in the Elisabeth Church took place in 1867. It was replaced by a new organ in the course of the church renovation in 1902. This was completely unplayable after numerous repairs since 1979. The third organ was built in 1985 by Gerhard Hradetzky and has 38 registers on three manuals and a pedal .
