The history

The Wiedmann Bible - the original

The idea of translating Bible verses into pictures came to Willy Wiedmann in 1984 while he was commissioned to paint the Pauluskirche in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen. He wanted to simplify the Bible and bring it closer to people. In July 2000 he finished his work. Because the technology was not ready at the time, Wiedmann was unable to publish the Leporello and stowed the Bible books in four boxes in the attic of his gallery. They were only rediscovered by their son Martin Wiedmann after the artist's death. He had all the images scanned and digitized.

The Swiss light artist Gerry Hofstetter used images from the Wiedmann Bible for his performances in the Grossmünster in Zurich ( Switzerland ) and his US Light Art Grand Tour.

The original has only been exhibited three times since it was discovered in 2013: from June 3 to 7, 2015 at the German Evangelical Church Congress in Stuttgart , from November 27, 2016 to February 5, 2017 in the Weygang Museum in Öhringen, and from June 27 , 2015 . October 2018 to April 28, 2019 at the Museum of the Bible in Washington, DC Here the work was presented to the American public for the first time.

In 2017 there were two joint exhibitions in Germany with the Museum of the Bible and its local cooperation partners: from April 7th to May 13th in Augsburg and from May 22nd to September 10th in Wittenberg . The curator of the two events, entitled “Our Book”, was the German linguist and theologian Roland Werner from Marburg.

On May 7, 2017, the Wiedmann Bible was completely unfolded in the form of a facsimile for the first time to a length of 1517 m and presented to the public. The occasion was celebrations of the Reformation anniversary in Magdeburg . At the same time a world record attempt was made. Since December 2017, the Wiedmann Bible has been in the Guinness Book of Records as the world's largest Leporello, with an area of 645.2 m², until the record was broken in August 2018.

In cooperation with the German Bible Society , the Wiedmann Bible was published as a book for the first time in February 2018. The ART edition is supplemented with verses from the revised Luther Bible 2017. The layout was designed by the photographer and photo designer Manfred Rieker . The edition is limited to 3,333 copies. Various editions of the ART-Edition can be found in the holdings of the Gutenberg Museum in Mainz , the Bavarian State Library in Munich, the Duchess Anna Amalia Library in Weimar, the Saxon Main Bible Society in Dresden, the bibliorama - the Bible Museum in Stuttgart, the archive the City of Stuttgart , the VfB-Stuttgart and the Museum of the Bible in Washington, DC
