Willy Wiedmann (2001)

Wilhelm Richard Heinrich "Willy" Wiedmann (born March 14, 1929 in Ettlingen ; † June 21, 2013 in Bad Cannstatt , Stuttgart ) was a German painter , sculptor , musician , composer , writer and gallery owner .

In addition to numerous compositions, poems and pictures, he created his own painting style: polycon painting . In this way he also implemented his life's work, the Wiedmann Bible .

Life

Private

Wilhelm Richard Heinrich (Willy) Wiedmann was born as the son of Richard and Klara Wiedmann. Born white. He was married to Hilda Wiedmann, nee Wagner, and had three children: Richard, Cornelia and Martin. He owned two schnauzers, which he called Jakob and Jakobine, in keeping with his "Galerie am Jakobsbrunnen". Together with his wife they accompanied him on some of his numerous trips abroad, to exhibitions and festivals. In 2015, a commemorative plaque was attached to Galerie Wiedmann in Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt within the historical path .

education

Willy Wiedmann discovered his love for art as a child. At the age of four he could play the accordion. At five he learned the violin and the flute. In 1939 he had his first appearances in the chamber orchestra and at the age of thirteen he composed his first minuet on the church organ. He later studied orchestral and composition at the Staatliche Musikhochschule in Stuttgart (1950–1958), where he was a student of Johann Nepomuk David , among others . At the end of the 1960s, Wiedmann devoted himself to studying painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart (1960–1963). His teachers included Prof. Heinrich Wildemann, who had taken over the Willi Baumeister class.

The artist

As during his studies, Willy Wiedmann did not commit to a single art direction. Music and painting were an equally important part of his artistic work. He even brought the music into his pictures.

The musician and composer

Wiedmann created a total of 150 opus works . He also worked as a freelance musician and composer at the Württemberg State Theater in Stuttgart (1954–1964) and for radio stations such as B. SDR , SWF and ZDF (1964-1982). Wiedmann worked as a jazz musician for more than 10 years in order to finance his studies, among other things. During this time he worked with world-famous artists: from Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald to Stan Getz and Benny Goodman to Lionel Hampton and Oscar Peterson . The music alone was not enough for the all-rounder, however.

The painter and gallery owner

After studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart, Willy Wiedmann developed his own style of painting, which he called Polykonmalerei (multi-panel painting) and which he exhibited for the first time in 1965, first in Stuttgart and later internationally.

Wiedmann found particular interest in church painting, so that he mainly worked as a church painter. He designed a total of three houses of worship artistically. In the years 1975–1998 he carried out numerous fresco paintings and paintings in other techniques a. a. in Italy, Austria, Denmark and Germany. These included the Martinskirche in Wildberg and the Pauluskirche in Stuttgart- Zuffenhausen . In 1982, Wiedmann made the “Martin's window” for the Martinskirche, in collaboration with Volker Saile and Laleh Bastian, and two years later he took over the complete painting of the Pauluskirche.

The Wiedmann Bible - polycon painting

It was also the connection between church and art that gave Wiedmann the idea of his life's work: the Wiedmann Bible . He worked on it for sixteen years (1984-2000). With its 3,333 sheets, as a continuous fanfold , it is probably the longest painted Bible in the world. Wiedmann created them in the style of his polycon painting. During his professional life he painted more than 30,000 pictures, with which he was particularly successful abroad.

Wiedmann became known not only through the exhibitions of his own works of art in national and international galleries, but also as a supporter of various artists that he exhibited himself. In 1964, Wiedmann opened his first gallery, the "Galerie am Jakobsbrunnen" in Bad Cannstatt, which he managed until 1985. He also worked as a gallery owner with great artists. These included Pablo Picasso , Georges Braque and Salvador Dalí , among others . He helped Dalí to get to know him in Germany, for example, when the demand for his art in this country was still low. In 1966, Wiedmann was the first to exhibit Dalí's pictures in Stuttgart in his “Galerie am Jakobsbrunnen”. This was followed by works by the Viennese School and Neoclassicism, as well as - still at the time of apartheid - by the South African Nkoane Harry Moyaga. According to his own statement, Wiedmann was the first gallery owner in Europe to exhibit pieces by a black African from South Africa. In total, Wiedmann opened or managed five other galleries during his lifetime, including the “Pictures for Business” branch in New York (co-founder, 1967–1977), TWS floor gallery in Stuttgart (director 1972–1977), the Kunsthöfle in Bad Cannstatt (director 1983 –1985) and the sculpture garden, Stuttgart (1983).

The writer

Despite his work as a painter, gallery owner, musician and composer, Wilhelm Wiedmann still found time to write. He wrote a total of seven books, five hundred poems and several song texts and radio plays. Most of them, however, he published under one of his many pseudonyms, such as "Alkibiades Zickle". A restaurant, the "Zickle", was named after this alias.
