Manfred Rieker (born December 22, 1939 in Ihringshausen ) is a German photographer and photo designer . He became internationally known for his advertising photos in the automotive , furniture and entertainment industries.

Life

Manfred Rieker was born in 1939 in Ihringshausen in Northern Hesse . At the age of eight he moved to Stuttgart with his parents , who ran a bakery there. After completing his school education, he began an apprenticeship as a typesetter at the Haar printing company in Stuttgart Ost in 1954 and completed it three years later with a journeyman's examination. He then worked there for two years in the field in the area of ​​print job acquisition. In 1961, Rieker moved to the Bosch company and worked there for two years as an advertising assistant until he later became deputy advertising manager in the field of electric vehicles.

Work for Audi

In 1969, Manfred Rieker finally started his own business as an advertising photographer. In the past decades he has worked with well-known companies and people, such as Kodak , Siemens , Zumtobel , IBM , Interstuhl and the jazz musician Charly Antolini . In 1985 he signed an exclusive artistic contract with Audi NSU Auto Union AG .

In 1973 the jury of the BFF Professional Association of Free Photographers and Film Designers accepted him and recognized him as a freelance artist. Rieker has since resigned there. He is also a member of the Art Directors Club Germany to this day .

In 1972 Rieker opened his first photo studio in Magstadt near Stuttgart. In 1986 the outdoor studio "Ilios Fotodesign" followed in Porto Heli, Greece. Here he worked on numerous advertising campaigns or literature, etc. a. for Mercedes-Benz , Porsche , Ergoline, Siemens, or Bugatti . For this purpose, he had a ramp for heavy-duty cranes built to the 1,100 m² photo platform, which was right by the sea. In 2012 Rieker sold the property.

Today Manfred Rieker lives in Stuttgart. His studio in Magstadt was also used for filming, among other things. For example, the cinema production Kreuzweg for the broadcasters SWR and Arte was shot here, as well as the Oliver Hirschbiegel film Elser - He would have changed the world or parts of the Vox series Shopping Queen .

Working method

Manfred Rieker did not use any software-based image processing programs in his photographs. He worked with the help of direct and indirect light.

For the car campaign with Audi , Manfred Rieker developed his own lighting concept and lighting technology that he only uses for this customer. Among other things, this included special light walls.

In 1990 the cooperation project Light Aesthetics - Departure into a New Dimension with the Zumtobel company took place. It was about the influence of light as a fourth dimension and its effect on various objects. The aim of the experiment was to bring artificial and natural light into harmony. The dimension of the luminaire body is masked by its lighting effect. The room concept should meet the following criteria: To realize from simple building elements, different, idealized basic types, architectural large-scale planning. This technology can be used in museums, conference rooms, department stores and airport lounges, among others.
