Wiener Neustädter Pforte

The Wiener Neustädter Pforte (also Ödenburger Pforte ) is the geographical connection between the Vienna Basin and the Eisenstadt Basin .

This depression is 13 km wide and lies between the Leithagebirge in the northeast and the Rosaliengebirge in the south and forms the watershed between Leitha and Wulka .

In order to protect the Vienna Basin from the incursions of the Hungarians in the early Middle Ages, the Wiener Neustadt with the Wiener Neustadt Castle was founded in 1194 .

On the Burgenland side are the Neufelder See , the Steinbrunner See and the Pöttschinger See , the remains of the lignite mining in this region. The Wiener Neustädter Canal was built to transport the brown coal to the then Hungarian border near Pöttsching .
