The St. Wigberti Church is a Catholic church in Erfurt .

St. Wigbert has existed as a parish since the middle of the 10th century. The current late Gothic church was consecrated in 1473 . The patron St. Wigbert , whose festival is on August 13th, was a companion of St. Boniface .

During the Reformation , St. Wigbert was heavily disputed between Catholic and Protestant believers and clergy. It has been Catholic since 1606, with an interruption during the Thirty Years' War in Sweden as a Protestant garrison church. From 1651 to 1822 it was also the monastery church of the new monastery of the Augustinian Hermits, for which they converted the adjoining Valentinerhof into the Wigbertihof . From 1699–1802 the church was also the court and burial church of the Electorate Mainz governors who resided in the neighboring governorate . From 1806 to 1814 the church was used as a garrison church by the French civil and military administration.

During the Second World War , when the neighboring Barfüßerkirche was destroyed by an aerial mine on November 25, 1944, the Wigbertkirche was also damaged, the windows in the chancel burst open, whereupon the services took place in the sacristy.

In the 1950s and 1990s, the interior of the church and the furnishings were redesigned, and extensive building renovation began in 2003.

The air raid shelter from the Second World War, accessible from the inner courtyard, has been open to the public again since 2005 and can be viewed by prior arrangement.

Fire watchtower

The current tower of the church dates from 1409, the spire was one of the inhabited fire watch towers until 1878 and was rebuilt for this purpose as early as 1563.
