The Bartholomäuskirche was a church in the old town of Erfurt . It was on the western slope . Today only its tower, the Bartholomäusturm , is left.

history

The Bartholomäuskirche was first mentioned in a document in 1282. In 1291 a fire destroyed the church, but was rebuilt in the following years. The tower was built between 1411 and 1448. After a restoration, the church got a new organ in 1511 from the organ builder Andreas Eggemann . After the Reformation in 1525, the Bartholomäuskirche was assigned to the Protestant parish of the Barfüßerkirche and was used until 1571. In 1545 the city council of Erfurt had the copper roof of the tower replaced by a slate roof. In 1660 a fire destroyed the already unused church, but not the tower. The walls, threatened with collapse, were torn down between 1667 and 1668. In 1715 the nave was completely demolished and the parish and diaconate house of the Barfüßer congregation was built in its place from 1715 to 1717. In 1876 the buildings were purchased by private individuals. The tower was used as the bell tower of the Barfüßerkirche until 1942.

When the American troops marched into Erfurt, the Bartholomäusturm came under artillery fire on April 11, 1945, with the wooden pointed helmet and the tracery balustrade being destroyed. By 1950, the war damage had largely been eliminated, but the hood was replaced by a flat roof with a surrounding parapet. The eight-sided tower hood was reconstructed as part of the celebrations for the city's 1250th anniversary in 1992.

The tower, which was awarded to the Erfurt museums in 1972, is now part of the city museum .

Carillon

Today there is a carillon in the 35 meter high Bartholomäusturm .

The decision to install the carillon was made in April 1977, probably also in view of the simultaneous redesign of Angers into a pedestrian zone . The ensemble, consisting of 60 bronze bells from the Apolda company Schilling , was lifted into the structure of the tower and installed on August 18, 1979. The total weight of the bells is 13 tons and 570 kg, the largest weighs 2,393 kg, the smallest 20 kg.

On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the founding of the GDR , the inauguration took place on October 7, 1979 with a great participation of the population with a concert. At the time it was the largest carillon in the GDR , today it is the fifth largest of the 42 carillon in Germany .

In 1992 the bells were revised by the Karlsruhe bell and art foundry and a computer-controlled slot machine was installed. The five-octave carillon with 74 pieces has been sounding automatically three times a day (10/12/18) and is played by a carillon on special occasions.
