Magdalenenkapelle (Erfurt)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Magdalenenkapelle is a small, secular church building in the old town of Erfurt . It belongs to the cathedral parish and was originally a cemetery chapel. Today it is used as a columbarium .

history

The Magdalenenkapelle was first mentioned in a document in 1227. The current church was built around 1341 and served as a chapel for an adjacent inner-city cemetery. After the introduction of the Reformation in 1525, it was initially no longer used. In 1546 the cemetery was also closed. Between 1622 and 1803 the Erfurt Cathedral used the chapel, which was profaned and rebuilt at the end of the 19th century. Until 2011, the "theater in the chapel" was located in the rooms. Since 2014 the chapel has served as a columbarium with 420 urn spaces. The necessary conversions were designed by the Erfurt artist Evelyn Körber.
