Exposed foundation of the church

The Leonhardskirche was a parish church on the Petersberg in Erfurt .

history

The Leonhardskirche was built from 1172, and the altar was consecrated in 1185, which is why the completion of the church can be assumed at this point in time. In 1290, Gothic modifications were made to the windows of the Romanesque church.

When the Petersberg Citadel was built as a baroque city fortress in the 17th century, the church was no longer used as such. They built it in 1677 to the armory to, inter alia, the large gothic windows were bricked up. Military use continued until 1945. At that time, the building was destroyed in a bomb attack or blown up by Allied soldiers.

In 1996 the foundation of the church was excavated and made visible.
