Wilbert Louis Olinde (born July 23, 1955 in New Orleans , Louisiana ) is a former German basketball player of American origin. After working in the management of financial services, the business graduate Olinde now works as a management consultant and mental trainer.

Career

Olinde (also called the Black Pearl or Black Pearl ) began his career as a basketball player in California, u. a. as a player at San Diego High School and then, 1973 to 1977, the University of California (UCLA) college basketball team . Under coach John Wooden he won the NCAA Division I Basketball Championship in 1975 , but was not used in the final. In total, he played 70 games for UCLA, in which he scored an average of 2.3 points.

After studying economics at the University of California, he was brought to Germany in 1977 by former UCLA player Terry Schofield in the basketball league at SSC Göttingen (later ASC 1846 Göttingen ), where he was the captain of the team under coach Schofield overall Three times German champion (1980, 1983, 1984) and two German cup winners (1984, 1985). In the book 50 Years of the Basketball Bundesliga, Olinde is referred to as the “figurehead of Göttingen's successes” and the crowd favorite. At the same time, he began studying business administration at the University of Göttingen , which he completed with the academic degree of business administration.

Olinde, who originally intended “only to want to stay in Germany for one year”, acquired German citizenship in 1983 and then went on to play several unofficial missions in the men's national team.

In 1987, cancer forced him to give up his career. He worked for an insurance company in Göttingen, and in 1995 he moved to Hamburg , where he was employed in the management of a bank. He has now withdrawn from the everyday basketball business, even if after the end of his playing career he still worked as an assistant coach for the U18 national team for women and as a talent scout for the German Basketball Association . Olinde was twice German basketball champion in the over 40 competition class.

In 2003, Olinde set up as a freelance trainer for motivation, social skills and personality development and as a speaker. He is married and has three children. His son Louis Olinde is a basketball player and German national player. In 2017 the book "Germany for one season - The true story of Wilbert Olinde Jr." was published by Christoph Ribbat .
