Wilfred Samuel "Wilf" Smith (born September 3, 1946 in Neumünster as Wilfred Samuel Schmidt ) is a former English football player. From 1963 to 1977 he was for six clubs in the Football League First Division , the top division in English football at the time, in the Football League Second Division and the Football League Third Division .

Career

societies

As a child, Wilfred moved with his parents to England, where he grew up near Sheffield. The Schmidts changed their surname to Smith and took British citizenship .

Wilf, as the English called Wilfred, started playing football with the Sheffield Boys . After talent scouts from Sheffield Wednesday in 1960 became aware of the talented defender, they signed him in 1962 for their junior team. After only one season he moved up to the professional team and received his first professional contract at the age of 17 in September 1963. From then on, he played 206 point games until the end of the 1969/70 season and scored four goals.

With the descent of his club as he moved to the Table of season 1970/71 for a sum of 100,000 pounds - never before such a sum was for a full back pay - for the Liga rivals Coventry City . For the club he played 135 point games, scored one goal and remained, as before with Sheffield Wednesday, athletic in the lower half of the table. In each case at the end of the season 1974 and 1975 he was given on a loan deal first to the third division club Brighton & Hove Albion , further to the second division club Millwall .

From March 1975 to November 1976 he played for the second division Bristol Rovers 54 point games, in which he scored two goals. Most recently he played across the seasons from 1976 to 1977 for third division club Chesterfield FC ; then he ended his football career.

National team

Hoping for an international career in the colors of his new home country, Schmidt played for one of the youth teams and played six internationals for the English U23 team at the side of the later goalkeeper legend Peter Shilton - but it was never meant to be an A international pass.

Others

With his 341 games (five goals) in the highest English league, Wilf Smith is the German with the second most appearances. Only Manchester City's legendary goalkeeper Bert Trautmann sniffed more first division air with 363 games, followed by Robert Huth with 322 league games. After his football career, he tried his hand at business and is said to have earned millions as the owner of a discount chain.
