Wilhelm Bickel

Wilhelm Bickel (born March 14, 1903 in Bombay ; † April 7, 1977 in Zurich ; resident in Bubikon ) was a Swiss - British historian , social scientist , statistician , financial scientist and university lecturer .

biography

The son of a businessman spent his childhood and youth in India and southern Germany and after attending school began studying social economics at the University of Zurich , which he completed in 1926 with a doctorate with a dissertation on the subject of changes in the economic rationale of free trade policy since the 18th century. Century completed. After a subsequent stay in England he returned during the Great Depression back in 1932 in Switzerland. On his return he became a statistician for the cantonal governments of Basel and Zurich before completing his habilitation in 1944 .

In 1946 he accepted a position as a professor at the chair for statistics , practical social economics and finance at the University of Zurich and continued teaching until his retirement in 1973. During this time, Andreas Miller completed his habilitation with him. In the meantime he was also rector of the University of Zurich between 1966 and 1967 . After his retirement in 1973 he was awarded the title of honorary professor .

On his 70th birthday in 1973, Heinz Haller and others published the commemorative publication Social Science in the Service of Economic Policy. Wilhelm Bickel on his 70th birthday .

Bickel wrote numerous specialist papers. In 1947 a standard work on demography appeared with the history of population and population policy in Switzerland . His other publications included:
