Friedrich Wilhelm Richard Fries (born October 23, 1845 in Landeshut , Silesia, † September 18, 1928 in Halle an der Saale ) was a German philologist and educator.

Life

The son of a royal Prussian road and hydraulic engineering inspector attended school in Graudenz and Schweidnitz . From 1865 he studied philology and history in Breslau , where he received his doctorate in 1870. From 1871 to 1880 he was a high school teacher in Bielefeld and Barmen ( Wuppertal ). In 1876 he married Luzie Delius in Bielefeld, daughter of the cloth manufacturer Hermann Delius . From 1880 he was director of the grammar school in Eutin and from 1881 director of the Latina of the Francke Foundations in Halle, whose entire management he took over in 1882. From 1895 he was chairman of the scientific examination commission and from 1897 professor of education at the University of Halle . In 1898 he received an honorary doctorate from the local theological faculty. In 1921 he retired. Under his leadership, the number of pupils increased significantly, and various school buildings of the foundations were renovated or rebuilt. Of his sons, Eduard Fries became a missionary in the Dutch East Indies , then director of the Rhenish Mission Society in Barmen, Wilhelm Fries became pastor and superintendent in Delitzsch .
