Wilhelm Georg Dettmer (born June 29, 1808 in Breinum near Hildesheim , † May 28, 1876 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German opera singer (bass).

Life

Dettmer, son of a farmer, received his education at the Andreanum in Hildesheim and later at the school teacher seminar in Alfeld (originally he was supposed to be a primary school teacher), which he soon left to join wandering actors.

He received his first music lessons from his director Santo, and soon he found engagements in Hanover , Braunschweig , Breslau , Kassel , where Louis Spohr was the most beneficial influence for him, and Frankfurt am Main. In 1842 Dettmer made a guest appearance at the highest level of the artistic community, at the court theater in Dresden , where he was also engaged and, after he had perfected himself in art singing under Mieksch's direction, was the darling of the audience for a number of years.

Nevertheless, in the 1960s he moved from the Dresden theater to the theater in Frankfurt am Main. Here he was celebrated no less as a singer and performer until his retirement from the stage in 1874.

His son Friedrich Dettmer and his grandson Wilhelm Dettmer were also theater actors and opera singers.
