Wilhelm Jestädt

Wilhelm Jestädt (born August 4, 1865 in Fulda ; † May 6, 1926 there ) was a German Catholic theologian .

Life

Jestädt, son of a baker, attended grammar school in Fulda and then completed his theological studies in Würzburg and Fulda. On December 21, 1889, he was ordained a priest in Fulda Cathedral by Bishop Josef Weyland . After positions as chaplain in Schmalnau in the Rhön and in Kassel , from 1894 as curate and religion teacher in Bad Hersfeld , he took over the parish of Steinhaus near Fulda on May 1, 1897 .

On March 1, 1905, he became pastor and dean in Fritzlar . As an art-loving clergyman, he left lasting traces of his more than 20 years of work in Fritzlar. He played a key role in the restoration of the Fritzlar Cathedral (1913–1920), having previously had the Holy Spirit Chapel in the south in front of the city restored. He also carried out the renovation of the Cathedral Museum (1914-1919), whose rich art treasures he made accessible to the public. He made an outstanding contribution to documenting the history of Fritzlar through intensive studies.

On the occasion of the 1200th anniversary of the city of Fritzlar in 1925 he was appointed "Papal Secret Chamberlain" ( Monsignore ) for the services he had made to the cathedral renovation , for the commemorative publication he had written for the 1200th anniversary of the City of Fritzlar (724–1924) awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Marburg and made an honorary citizen by the city of Fritzlar .

He died in the rural hospital in Fulda and was buried in the grass courtyard of the cloister in Fritzlar Cathedral. The square between the cathedral, the town hall and the former Rector's School was named after him "Dr.-Jestädt-Platz".
