Life

In 1874 he went on a study trip to Tyrol . From April 9, 1875 he studied at the Royal Academy of Arts in Munich with Ludwig von Löfftz , Wilhelm von Diez , Otto Seitz and Andreas Müller and has since settled in Munich (1890: Landwehrstrasse 71). In 1880 he visited Venice. In 1879 Bader was commissioned to paint the Café Danner at Karlstor in Munich; In 1883 he was busy with the wall paintings in Neuschwanstein Castle . In 1897 Bader moved to Darmstadt and took over the management of the painting school there. Among other things, Friedrich Wilhelm ("Fritz") Büchner (1880–1965), a great-nephew of the poet Georg Büchner , became his pupil, whose portrait he painted. Bader was a founding member of the Free Association of Darmstadt Artists ; In 1899 he was elected its chairman. On October 27, 1898, he was awarded the Knight's Cross II Class of the Order of Merit of Philip the Magnanimous . In 1910 the Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig awarded him the title of professor.

Bader created idealizing and realistic portraits as well as depictions of landscapes with staffage as oil paintings, watercolors and drawings. The influences of Arnold Böcklin and Anselm Feuerbach are particularly noticeable in his early works.
