Willy Odenthal

Wilhelm "Willy" Odenthal (born July 24, 1896 in Cologne-Dünnwald ; † January 12, 1962 in Mainz-Laubenheim ) was a German politician ( USPD , later SPD ).

Life and work

After attending elementary school, Odenthal completed an apprenticeship as a surveyor. From 1915 to 1918 he took part in the First World War as a soldier and was wounded several times. During the Weimar Republic , he worked from 1919 to 1928 as an employee of the city administration in Opladen . He joined the trade union in 1919, attended administration school and studied economics, social science and public law at the University of Cologne for six semesters . From 1925 he was head of the employment offices in Horrem , Remscheid and Bad Kreuznach .

After the National Socialists came to power, Odenthal was removed from his office for political reasons. He worked as a sporting goods dealer from 1934 to 1942, took part in the Second World War as a soldier from 1942 to 1945 and was most recently taken prisoner, from which he was released in November 1945.

Odenthal had been the head of the employment office in Mainz since 1946 . He was appointed government director in 1947, was initially Vice President and later President of the State Labor Office Hesse - Palatinate , based in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse . In the 1950s he was a member of the supervisory board of the Dortmund-Hörder Hüttenunion .

Political party

Odenthal joined the USPD in January 1919 and later joined the SPD.

MP

Odenthal was from 1919 to 1922 a member of the Provincial Parliament of the Rhine Province .

Odenthal had been a member of the Rhineland-Palatinate Landtag since 1951 and was re- elected to the German Bundestag on September 23, 1951 for the late MP Ernst Roth in the Neustadt an der Weinstrasse constituency , to which he then belonged until 1961. From 1953 to 1957 he was chairman of the social policy working group of the SPD parliamentary group. From 1953 to 1961 he was also deputy chairman of the Bundestag Labor Committee.

From February 25, 1959 to November 29, 1961 he was a member of the European Parliament .

Public offices

After Jakob Steffan's resignation , Odenthal was appointed Minister of Social Affairs on September 14, 1950 to the government of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate led by Prime Minister Peter Altmeier . Due to the formation of a Christian-liberal coalition, he left the government on June 13, 1951 and was replaced in his function by Alois Zimmer .
