Wilhelm Unger (artist)
Christian Wilhelm Jacob Unger (born February 25, 1775 in Kirchlotheim , † August 18, 1855 in Neustrelitz ) was a German miniature painter , engraver , silhouette artist and lithographer .
Life
Wilhelm Unger, also Wilhelm I. Unger to distinguish himself from the son and grandson of the same name , was a son of the schoolmaster and organist Johannes Unger and his wife Luise, née Table leg. He studied with his uncle Johann Heinrich Tischbein (d. J.) at the Kassel Art Academy and worked primarily as a copper engraver. In 1795 he was appointed court painter to Prince Friedrich von Waldeck in Arolsen . The latter sent him to Paris for further training, where he studied with the miniature painter Jean-Baptiste Isabey from 1795 to 1798 .
From 1799 to 1801 Unger worked as a teacher at the drawing academy for women founded by his uncle Wilhelm Tischbein in Göttingen . From 1801 to 1806 he was in Hamburg with Wilhelm Tischbein. From November 1806 to the end of 1815 he was again in Paris.
In 1816/17 he became a teacher of miniature painting at the Kunstakademie Kassel and in 1817 court painter in Neustrelitz with his former Kassel pupil Marie von Hessen-Kassel , now Grand Duchess of Mecklenburg-Strelitz . In March 1820 Unger was appointed professor at the Kassel Art Academy.
