Wilhelm Zillen
Johannes Wilhelm Zillen , also Vilhelm Zillen (born January 14, 1824 in Schleswig , Duchy of Schleswig , † March 14, 1870 in Copenhagen ), was a German-Danish animal , genre and landscape painter as well as an etcher and illustrator of the Düsseldorf School .
Life
Zillen, son of the goldsmith Jakob Zillen and his wife Anne Cathrine, née Witzel, initially worked in an office . In 1845 he came to Copenhagen. There he attended the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts , which he soon left. From 1845 to 1847 he worked in the sculptor's studio of Herman Wilhelm Bissen . He switched to painting in the 1840s. In 1852 he married Lisette Louise Larsen (or Lau, 1825–1884). In 1854 he moved to Düsseldorf , where he stayed until 1856. In Düsseldorf he frequented the Scandinavian painters Sophus Jacobsen , Peter Nicolai Arbo and Werner Holmberg , with whom he roamed the landscape of the Neandertal around the summer of 1854 . In 1857 he settled in Copenhagen again. He participated in numerous exhibitions. Both his paintings and his etchings, in which landscapes with pastoral animal decorations predominate, were in great demand.
