Willem Adelaar
Willem FH Adelaar (* 1948 in The Hague ) is a Dutch linguist whose research focuses on the indigenous languages of America . He is Professor of Indigenous American Languages and Cultures at Leiden University .
Adelaar has worked in particular on various Quechua varieties (including Tarma and Pacaraos ), Aymara and Mapudungun , but also on extinct languages such as Culli in northern Peru. His main work is the monograph The Languages of the Andes, published in 2004 . For a wider readership he brought out several works on the history and religion of the Inca as well as translations from Quechua into Dutch . As an expert on minority languages of the Andes, he is also one of the editors of the interactive World Atlas of Endangered Languages from UNESCO .
In 1994 Adelaar was appointed to the newly created Chair of Indigenous American Languages and Cultures at Leiden University. He is convinced that America's linguistic diversity provides a deeper understanding of the history of Ancient America than classical archaeological research into the settlement of America .
In 2014 he was made Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion for his scientific results . The Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos in Lima ( Peru ) has awarded him an honorary doctorate . In 2019 Adelaar was elected to the Academia Europaea .
