Willi Engelmann

Willi Engelmann (born May 10, 1924 - † August 28, 1981 in Halle (Saale) ) was a German police officer. He was lieutenant general and chief of the district authorities of the German People's Police (BDVP) Gera and Halle .

Life

Engelmann, the son of a working class family, had to do military service in the Wehrmacht during the Second World War .

In the Soviet zone of occupation he became a member of the KPD in 1945 , and of the SED and the FDJ in 1946 . Until 1948 he was chairman of the FDJ district committee in Nordhausen . Engelmann became a member of the German People's Police (VP) in 1948 and pursued a career as an officer. He began his service as a political officer with the rank of VP High Commissioner. From 1950 to 1952 he acted as deputy chief of the state police authority of Thuringia. After the districts were formed in the GDR , he was head of the BDVP Gera from July 1952 to 1955 with the rank of VP inspector. At the same time he was a member of the SED district leadership and member of the district day Gera. For his work in suppressing the popular uprising on June 17, 1953 , he was awarded the newly established Patriotic Order of Merit in October 1954 . In 1955 he was reassessed as the successor to Max Zaspel as head of the BDVP Halle and in July 1957 as colonel of the VP. He held this position for 25 years until 1980. Engelmann was also a member of the SED district leadership and a member of the district assembly in the Halle district. By resolution of the GDR Council of Ministers , he was appointed major general on July 1, 1964 . His promotion to lieutenant general took place 15 years later - on June 29, 1979 - the chairman of the National Defense Council of the GDR , Erich Honecker . On June 23, 1980, the National Defense Council of the GDR approved his dismissal from the DVP for health reasons due to full disability.

After a serious illness, Engelmann died at the age of 57 and was buried in the Gertraudenfriedhof in Halle .
