Willi Gautschi

Willi Gautschi (born January 16, 1920 in Reinach ; † February 7, 2004 in Baden ; resident in Reinach and Baden) was a Swiss historian .

Life

The son of a farmer studied history and German at the universities of Basel , Lausanne , Paris and Zurich . During the Second World War he did active service ; he commanded a grenadier company . In 1954 he received his doctorate with Leonhard von Muralt in Zurich with a thesis on the Olten Action Committee .

From 1947 to 1962 Gautschi worked as a district teacher in Baden, then until his retirement in 1985 as a high school teacher at the Baden Cantonal School . In 1960/61 he was an ICRC delegate in North Africa . From 1970 to 1975 he was also a lecturer in history at the University of Zurich.

Gautschi wrote a. a. Standard works on the national strike in 1918 and on Lenin's stays in Switzerland, a highly acclaimed volume on Aargau canton history and an extensive biography by Henri Guisan , for which he received the Aargau Literature Prize in 1990 . With the help of sources, Gautschi's research refuted the legends of the revolution about the state strike and worked out its economic, social and political causes. Right-wing circles said he was a member of the Social Democratic Party . Gautschi's estate is in the Aargau State Archives.
