Willi Steputat (born October 28, 1888 in Berlin ; † October 17, 1946 there ) was a German wrestler , Olympic participant in 1912 and sports functional .

Wrestling career

Willi Steputat grew up in Berlin and became a member of the SC Heros Berlin wrestling club as a teenager. As was customary at the time, he wrestled exclusively in the Greco-Roman style. It is not known whether he took part in a German championship before World War I. In 1911 he started at the unofficial world championship in Dresden in the weight class up to 70 kg body weight. His individual results at this championship are not known, but he does not appear in the list of winners in this weight class .

In 1912 he qualified for participation in the Olympic Games in Stockholm. He started there in middleweight (then up to 75 kg body weight). He lost his first fight against Conrad Åberg from Finland, had bye in the 2nd round and lost in the 3rd round to Andrea Gargano from Italy, which he was eliminated. From the 4th round, 18 wrestlers were still in action at this tournament. Willi Steputat can therefore be placed in 19th place.

After the First World War, Willi Steputat started at the German championships in 1921, 1922 and 1923. In 1921 he was runner-up in the lightweight category behind Bruno Heckel from Auerbach, in 1922 he came 6th in the same weight class and in 1923 he was German Lightweight champion ahead of Alfred Stuwe from Berlin and Josef Sürth from Cologne. He was no longer at the start at international championships. In 1920 and 1924 Germany was excluded from participation in the Olympic Games by the " Entente " powers.

Functionary career

In 1926 Willi Steputat took over the post of sports warden in DASV from 1893 for the wrestling division. He held this office with short interruptions until 1940. He therefore played a crucial role in the development of wrestling in Germany. In 1928 and 1932 he was the team leader of the German wrestling team at the Olympic Games in Amsterdam and Los Angeles. At these games Kurt Leucht and Jakob Brendel , both from Nuremberg, won gold medals, the only gold medals that German wrestlers won before World War II. During the time of Willi Steputat as the responsible sports warden in the DASV from 1893, the successes of well-known wrestlers such as Kurt Hornfischer , Wolfgang Ehrl , Eduard Sperling , Sebastian Hering , Ludwig Schweickert and Fritz Schäfer and many other wrestlers fell.

In 1934, under the aegis of Willi Steputat, freestyle wrestling was introduced in the DASV and this year, German championships in this style were held for the first time. He was supported by the new German Reich trainer Jean Földeak , while Fritz Bräun temporarily acted as Reich trainer for wrestling in the Greco-Roman style .

In 1936 Willi Steputat acted as a referee at the Olympic Games in Berlin.
