Sir William Maddock Bayliss (born May 2, 1860 in Butcroft, Wednesbury / Staffordshire , today in Sandwell , † August 27, 1924 in London ) was a British physiologist and pioneer of endocrinology .

Life

William Bayliss was born the son of an industrialist whose business he later carried on. He attended the Mowbray House School in Wolverhampton before he began training as a doctor, first as an apprentice to a general practitioner , then at the local hospital, which he broke off. From 1881 to 1884 he studied a. a. Zoology , anatomy , physics and physiology at University College London before moving to Wadham College in Oxford in 1885 , where he received a PhD in physiology three years later. After his return to London he held an assistant professorship from 1903, and in 1912 he was appointed professor of general physiology .

He was married to Gertrude Starling, Ernest Starling's sister . The couple had four children.

Together with Ernest Starling, Bayliss discovered the hormone secretin in 1902 . The two scientists also jointly discover the peristalsis of the digestive tract . The Bayliss effect was also first described by William Bayliss.

At the beginning of the 20th century he was involved in the Browndog affair when there was public protests on the occasion of a vivisection of a dog by Bayliss.

Honors (selection)

In 1903 Bayliss was accepted into the Royal Society , whose Copley Medal he received in 1919. He was knighted in 1922.
