William Berryman Scott

William Berryman Scott (* 12. February 1858 in Cincinnati , Ohio ; † 29. March 1947 in Princeton , New Jersey ) was an American vertebrate - paleontologist , an authority in the field of mammals and lead author of monographs on the Oligocene of White River in South Dakota .

Life

Scott graduated from Princeton University and received his Ph.D. at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg . He later was a professor of geology and paleontology at Princeton University. In 1925 he was president of the Geological Society of America .

He married Alice Adeline Post on December 15, 1883.

Honors

In 1910 he was awarded the Wollaston Medal of the Geological Society of London and in 1939 the Penrose Medal of the Geological Society of America , and in 1940 the Daniel Giraud Elliot Medal of the National Academy of Sciences . He was elected to the American Philosophical Society in 1886, the National Academy of Sciences in 1906, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1912.
