William Charles Anderson

William Charles Anderson (born May 7, 1920 in La Junta , Colorado , † May 16, 2003 in Fairfield, California ; also known as William C. Anderson ) was an American writer who also wrote several science fiction novels.

life and work

William C. Anderson was born on May 7, 1920 in the small town of La Junta, Colorado in the USA. He served in the US Air Force during World War II until the US openly entered the Vietnam War and then retired with the rank of Colonel .

He started writing in the 1950s. First a series of columns for MATS Flyer , the Air Force (MATS = Military Air Transport Service ) magazine which was later renamed MAC Flyer (Military Airlift Command).

Several of his books have been autobiographical accounts of the adventures of Anderson himself, his wife Dortha (née Powers, 1919-2005), and their children Ann, Scott, and Holly.

All of his fiction works contain a minor character named Colonel Cornelius C. (for "Catastrophe") Callaghan. Callaghan, an Air Force career officer, is a profiteer who uses his detailed knowledge and skills to support the main characters, often despite regulations or higher-ranking agencies.

As a screenwriter he edited his own short story BAT-21 and Hurricane Hunters , which became a television film for ABC with Martin Milner .

In addition to his books, William C. Anderson wrote a monthly column for Motor Home under the names Back Roads and Off Ramp . The last of these was published two months before his death.

William Charles Anderson died on May 16, 2003 in Fairfield, California. He is buried in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu.
