William Compton, 1st Earl of Northampton , KG (around 1568 - June 24, 1630 ) was an English nobleman .

William Compton was the son of Henry Compton, 1st Baron Compton , and his wife Frances Hastings, daughter of the 2nd Earl of Huntingdon . When his father died in 1589, he inherited his title as 2nd Baron Compton and the associated seat in the House of Lords .

In 1603 he held the office of Lord Lieutenant of Warwickshire . On the occasion of Prince Charles' investiture as Duke of York , he was made Knight of the Bath on January 6, 1605 . In 1617 he was Lord Lieutenant of Worcestershire , Herefordshire , Shropshire , and North and South Wales . From 1617 he also held the office of Lord President of the Council for Wales and the Welsh Marches . On August 2, 1618, he was raised to Earl of Northampton . In 1622 he was Lord Lieutenant of Gloucestershire . In 1599 he married Elizabeth Spencer, daughter of Sir John Spencer († 1610). He had three children with her:

His son Spencer inherited the title of 3rd Baron Compton prematurely through Writ of Acceleration in 1626. In 1630 he inherited his father as 2nd Earl of Northampton.
