William Cox (governor)

William John Ellis Cox (born April 1, 1936 in Hobart , Tasmania ), officially: "His Excellency the Honorable William John Ellis Cox", is an Australian lawyer and judge. He was Governor of Tasmania from 2004 to 2008 .

Life

Cox attended Xavier College in Melbourne and then studied at the University of Tasmania in Hobart. He was admitted to the bar in 1960, received magistrate in 1976, and became Queen's Counsel in 1978 . In 1982 Cox became a member of the Federal Court of Australia , from 1995 to 2004 he was its president.

Cox was named Companion of the Order of Australia ( AC ) by Queen Elizabeth II on June 7, 1999 for his extraordinary service . He was previously awarded the Reserve Force Decoration (RFD) and Army's Efficiency Decoration (ED) , especially for his work in Vietnam.

In August 2004 he was initially acting governor of Tasmania to succeed Richard Butler ; In December 2004 he was appointed Governor of Tasmania by Queen Elizabeth II on the proposal of the Tasmanian Prime Minister Paul Lennon . Since April 2, 2008, the governor is Peter Underwood .

He has three children with his wife Jocelyn.
