William E. Barrett

William E. Barrett (born November 16, 1900 in New York City , New York , † September 14, 1986 in Denver , Colorado ) was an American writer.

Life

William Edmund Barrett grew up in New York City and spent several years in Denver. He sold his first poem at the age of 14. He completed an engineering training at Manhattan College. He later worked as a freelance writer for industry publications. It was during these years that he began writing short stories that were published in crime magazines.

His first book, the biography The Lady on Horseback , was published in 1938. A year later he returned to Denver, where he took on various positions as a specialist in aircraft technology and aviation at the beginning of the Second World War , including with the American Air Force. In 1951 his best-known novel The Left Hand of God appeared , which was later filmed with Humphrey Bogart in the leading role. His Lilies of the Field , published in 1962, was also successfully filmed.

Barrett preferred to deal with religious and philosophical subjects. In 1964 he wrote a biography about Pope Paul VI. His last work, the 1975 novel The Lady of the Lotus , deals with Far Eastern religion.
