Life

Young's family moved to Red River County , Texas, and later to nearby Grayson County in his youth . Young later attended Washington College in Tennessee, McKenzie College in Texas, and the University of Virginia , where he studied from 1859 to 1861. In September 1861 he returned to Texas to recruit a company of volunteers for service in the Confederate Army. Initially elected captain in the 9th Texas Infantry, Young was promoted to colonel after the Battle of Shiloh in April 1862 . He fought with honors in the battles of Perryville and Murfreesboro (Stones River), in which he was wounded. After his recovery he took part in 1863 in the relief attempts for the besieged Vicksburg under General Joseph E. Johnston and in the Battle of Chickamauga .

During the Atlanta Campaign in 1864, 9th Texas under Young was assigned to General Mathew Duncan Ector's brigade . After Ector was wounded on July 27th, Young was promoted to brigade commander and was promoted to brigadier general in mid-August. At the beginning of General John Bell Hood's Franklin-Nashville campaign, General Samuel Gibbs French's division , which also included Young's brigade, received orders on October 5 to storm enemy base Allatoona on the Atlanta-Tennessee railroad take, and suffered heavy losses. Among the victims was General Young, who lost his left foot (his predecessor Ector had already lost his left leg at Atlanta!) And was taken prisoner by the Northern States.

After his release on July 24, 1865, William Hugh Young worked as a real estate agent and attorney in San Antonio, Texas, where he died on November 28, 1901.
