William L. Fink

William Lee Fink (born July 22, 1946 in Coleman , Texas ) is an American ichthyologist .

Life

Fink is the son of Fred William Fink and Anna L. Davis, née Cobb. In 1967 he earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Miami . In 1969 he graduated from Missouri Southern State University with a Master of Science degree. From 1969 to 1971 he completed his military service at the Naval Medical Research Institute of the United States Navy in Bethesda , Maryland . Until 1975 he was a member of the reserve. In 1976 he received his Ph.D. from George Washington University. PhD in biology .

From 1976 to 1980 he was assistant curator and assistant professor at the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard University . In 1980 he became an associate professor of biology at the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard University. In 1982, Fink joined the faculty at the University of Michigan as a lecturer and assistant curator. In 1987 he became a lecturer and deputy curator and in 1996 he was promoted to professor and curator. From 2005 to 2011 he was director of the University of Michigan Zoological Museum. On May 31, 2014, Fink retired as professor emeritus and curator.

Fink's main research interests are the biology and systematics of fish with special expertise in neotropical species, higher classification as well as systematic theory and biogeography . Fink studied the phylogeny of piranhas , including the evolution of growth patterns and trophic specializations, as well as the group's historical biogeography. He also examined the connections in the group of Ostariophysi . His phylogenetic analyzes focus on non-traditional features such as ontogenetic trajectories and on morphometry .

His first descriptions include the types Sternopygus xingu , georgiana Fernaldella , Gambusia hispaniolae , Bryconamericus Bayano , Moenkhausia phaeonota , Pristobrycon careospinus , Pristobrycon maculipinnis , gouldingi Serrasalmus , Serrasalmus hastatus , Odontostilbe dialeptura , Odontostilbe mitoptera , Serrasalmus neveriensis , Limia Caymanensis , lacortei Nematobrycon , Xenurobrycon Heterodon , Xenurobrycon pteropus and Ptychocharax rhyacophila .

Fink went on research trips to the United States , the Bahamas , the Greater and Lesser Antilles , Brazil , Colombia , Venezuela and Panama .

Fink is a member of the American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists , the Society for the Study of Evolution , the American Association for the Advancement of Science , the Sigma Xi , the Sociedade Brasileira de Ictiologia, the Biological Society of Washington and the Society of Systematic Biologists , where he was president in 1990.

In 1972 Fink married Sara V. Haase. From this marriage a son was born.
