William Oberlander

William Edmund Oberländer (born February 1, 1869 in Greiz ; † March 23, 1946 in Jena ) was a German lawyer and politician .

Life

Born as the son of a master builder and grandson of Martin Gotthard Oberländer , Oberländer studied political science and law in Jena and Munich after attending the Greizer grammar school . During his studies in 1889 he became a member of the Germania Jena fraternity . After his exams and legal clerkship , he worked as a lawyer and notary in Greiz from 1897 . From 1905 to 1908 he was a member of the Greizer municipal council . From 1906 to 1919 he was a member of parliament and from 1918 President of the Landtag in the Landtag of the Principality of Reuss older line . From 1918 to 1919 he was a member and chairman of the state government of the Free State of Reuss older line. In 1919 he was a member of the German State Committee . He also belonged to the state committee for the Principality of Reuss older line . After the two Reussian Free States were merged, he was Minister of the People's State of Reuss from 1919 to 1920 . From 1922 he worked as a public prosecutor at the Joint Thuringian Higher Regional Court in Jena. In 1929 he retired. As a left-wing liberal, he was part of the German Liberal Party at times, but was later non-party.

Honors

A commemorative plaque was placed on the house where he was born at Richtstrasse 22 in Greiz .
