William R. Coyle (1925)

William Radford Coyle (born July 10, 1878 in Washington, DC , †  January 30, 1962 in Bethlehem , Pennsylvania ) was an American politician . Between 1925 and 1927 and again from 1929 to 1933 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Coyle attended the public schools of his home country and then studied in 1898 and 1899 at Columbian College , now George Washington University . In between he worked from 1896 for the United States Geological Survey . In 1900 he graduated from Naval War College in Newport ( Rhode Island ). From 1900 to 1906 he served in the Marine Corps , where he was promoted to captain. He then studied until 1907 at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia law. From 1908 he lived in Bethlehem, where he was school director from 1912 to 1918. From 1913 he was also a captain in the national guard of his state. During the First World War , he served again in the Marine Corps in 1918, where he rose to major. Coyle was president of the American Wholesale Coal Association in 1921 and 1922 ; from 1922 to 1925 he worked for the Tidewater Coal Exchange . Politically, he was a member of the Republican Party .

In the 1924 congressional elections , Coyle was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the 30th  constituency of Pennsylvania, where he succeeded Democrat Everett Kent on March 4, 1925 . Since he was defeated by his predecessor Kent in 1926, he was initially only able to complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1927 . In the elections of 1928 Coyle was re-elected to Congress in the 30th district of his state, where he replaced Kent on March 4, 1929. After being re-elected, he was able to spend two more terms in the US House of Representatives until March 3, 1933. These were shaped by the events of the global economic crisis.

In 1932 Coyle was not re-elected. In 1936 and 1942 he competed unsuccessfully to return to Congress. In 1936 and 1944 he took part as a delegate at the respective Republican National Conventions . During the Second World War , between 1941 and 1945, he headed the civil defense authority of the city of Bethlehem. He was also vice president of Weston Dodson & Co., Inc. from 1932 to 1954. From 1953 to 1959 he was chairman of the Bethlehem Redevelopment Authority . William Coyle died on January 30, 1962 in Bethlehem, where he was also buried.
