William Windom (actor)
William Windom (born September 28, 1923 in New York City , † August 16, 2012 in Woodacre , Marin County , California ) was an American actor .
Career
After serving in World War II, William Windom turned to acting. Since 1949 Windom played in numerous television productions, he was also seen on Broadway in New York. He made his film debut in 1962 as prosecutor Gilmer in the classic film Who disturbs the nightingale, directed by Robert Mulligan . In the following decades he played supporting roles in other movies such as Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971), A Ticket for Two (1987) and The Miracle of Manhattan (1994). He became famous for the role of the doctor Seth Hazlitt , whom he embodied in 52 episodes of the television series Murder is her hobby . Before he took on the role of doctor, he starred in Murder Is Her Hobby in an earlier episode, Dark Past, as Sam Breen, a murderer. He had previously worked on other television series such as The Farmer's Daughter My World and Welcome to It , and Windom received an Emmy Award in 1969 for his role in My World and Welcome to It . In the episode Planet-Killer of the Star Trek - Original Series he played Commodore Matt Decker.
William Windom worked as an actor well into his old age, in 2006 he retired into private life after making the short film Just .
Private
Windom was the son of Paul and Isobel Windom. His great-grandfather was the politician William Windom . He was married for the fifth time and has six children. Windom died of heart failure on August 16, 2012, aged 88, at his Woodacre, California home .
