Dumrath was born as the son of the lake chief pilot Theodor Dumrath . He first attended the village school in Thiessow and received private lessons from Küster Brandt in Groß Zicker . He then completed the teachers' seminar in Anklam by 1910 . He then found a job as a teacher in Demmin . During the First World War he was discharged from military service after a serious wound. In 1916 he went to Stettin as a teacher , where he married his wife Margarete in 1916 and worked until 1942. In the local state archive, the Szczecin city library and the government's domain department, he conducted studies on the history of his home region Mönchgut. He compiled the eight-volume Mönchguter Kinship Books, which lists all inhabitants of the peninsula who have emerged from church books and registry offices for the period from 1574 to 1943. During the summer holidays he came to Mönchgut regularly, talked to residents, sifted through documents and collected facts for the Mönchgut archive he had set up. He wrote extensive chronicles of the places Thiessow, Klein Zicker , Alt Reddevitz and Göhren . The Phillipshagen farm and a recipe collection of regional recipes against diseases were also an important part of his work.

In the course of the children's area deportation , Dumrath came to Rügen with the schoolchildren after bombing raids on Stettin and became a teacher and manager of a children's area deportation home in Göhren. He belonged to the NSDAP . After the end of the Second World War and the National Socialist tyranny, he was imprisoned in an internment camp. After his release, he was denied any further teaching activities due to his previous NSDAP membership. He worked in Thiessow as a course clerk and headed the community library.

His wife died in the early 1960s. In 1964, Dumrath compiled a three-part pilot's chronicle, which recorded all pilot's working in Mönchgut from 1606 onwards. At the end of 1968 he presented the clan books that had been drawn up. He died alone in the Bergen Hospital in 1969 and was buried in the local cemetery.
