Willy Eberl

Willy Eberl (born December 11, 1899 in Grumbach , † December 9, 1947 in Freital ) was a painter and art collector .

Life

Since childhood he had known Hellmuth Heinz , who later became the Freital museum director. While attending the Dresden School of Applied Arts (with Max Feldbauer and Paul Rößler ) he met Otto Dix .

In Freital he got by with the design of wallpaper. Through his acquaintance with the young avant-garde artists, he succeeded in uniting a top-class collection with works by them. In addition to the Dix environment, it includes works by Carl Bantzer , Otto Gussmann and Georg Lührig .

His own paintings were auctioned: Harvest landscape in Quohren (1942), An der Wiederitz (1943), still life with gladioli (1947) and a watercolor by Hainsdorf (1934). In 1940 he had his wife Rosa von Dix portrayed.

From 1936 to 1938 Erich Rudolph worked as a designer in Eberl's studio in Dresden. His draftsman Siegfried Ernst Bretschneider (* 1912) was taken prisoner of war. After 1945 Joachim Gelfert (* 1931) began his apprenticeship as a decorator painter here.

After Eberl's suicide in 1947, the city fathers negotiated a lifetime pension with the widow in 1949. His collection formed the basis for the Freital Municipal Collections at Burgk Castle .

Erich Rudolph took over the studio for three years and worked on ceramics and painting.
