Willy Lange (garden architect)

Willy Lange (born May 23, 1864 in Berlin ; † March 16, 1941 there ) was a German horticultural teacher, horticultural architect and specialist author.

Life

Lange, a son of the composer Gustav Lange , completed an apprenticeship as a gardener at the Metz company in Steglitz from 1882–84 and then attended the Royal Gardening College at the Wildlife Park near Potsdam from 1884–86 . 1886/87 he worked at Weber & Co in Wiesbaden, 1887–89 at Franz Deegen junior. in Köstritz . From 1889–96 he ran his own nursery in Leipzig-Lindenau and then lived on his capital in Dietharz near Gotha.

His influential work began with his activity as a teacher for plant cultivation at the Kgl. Gardening school in Potsdam (later Dahlem) from 1903 to 1915. In 1906 he was awarded the title of King there. Garden inspector and in 1911 a royal horticultural director. From 1900 he became known for his numerous publications on gardens, garden planning and garden design. In 1915 he quit his position and from then on worked freelance in Berlin-Wannsee .

He propagated concepts of the natural garden early on ; By this he understood a natural use of plants in the sense of a "biological aesthetic". The ecological handling of plants based on growth locations goes back to Lange. At the end of 1914 he developed the so-called " German Heldenhain ". For every fallen soldier a community with such should memorial form an oak tree will be planted. Lange's concept was implemented in various municipalities in Germany, for example with the Flensburg Ehrenhain .

On November 1, 1930, he joined the NSDAP . From 1933 he was regarded as a like-minded fellow of the National Socialists. On the occasion of his 70th birthday in 1934, the Agricultural University in Berlin awarded him an honorary professorship .

Some of Lange's gardens have been preserved to this day and are under monument protection.
