Willy René Josephina Wellens (born March 29, 1954 in Diest ) is a former Belgian football player and coach .

Player career

Wellens began his career at Lierse SK in 1972. After two years in Lier , he moved to RWD Molenbeek in Brussels . Wellens became Belgian champion with RWD in 1975 and left the club in 1978 for Standard Liège . In his farewell year 1981 at Les Rouches, he won the Belgian Supercup. That year Wellens signed a contract with Club Bruges . In five years in Bruges , he won the 1986 Cup and the Supercup in Belgium. In this successful year, Wellens moved on to Antwerp for Beerschot VAV , but was unable to win a title from that point on. 1989–1990 he played for a year with KV Kortrijk and in the 1990/1991 season he returned to RWD Molenbeek. From 1991 to 1993 he was under contract with Cercle Bruges . Wellens ended his career at KRC Mechelen in the 1993/1994 season.

International playing career

Wellens took part in the European Championship in Italy in 1980 and became vice European champion with the team. In total, he ran seven times for the Belgian national team .

Coaching career

In 2004, Wellens took over the coaching position at SWI Harelbeke, where he stayed until 2006. In the 2006/07 season he coached the Belgian first division club KV Ostend .
