action

Waltraud Rehmer hires the private detective Georg Wilsberg to solve the death of her husband, who was judged by the police to be a suicide. She firmly believes that her husband did not throw himself in front of a train, but was killed. He was the site manager in the building authority and lately he seemed to be depressed by something that had to do with his work in the building authority, possibly bribery of a colleague he did not want to reveal. But a jealous colleague who wanted his post is also conceivable. But since Wilsberg's friend Manni was offered this position on a provisional basis, this reason is actually ruled out.

After Wilsberg is made quite drastically clear by two men that he should stop his "snooping", he is convinced that Waltraud Rehmer is right and that her husband was murdered. In Rehmer's office, the detective finds a newspaper article referring to Rehmer's old school friend Walter Grahnke. When he takes a closer look at the photo for this article, he recognizes a very attractive young woman whom Manni has just introduced to him as his new girlfriend. Wilsberg fears that she only wants to use Manni for her own purposes. He asks Anna Springer to find out for him who this Sylvia is and so she can be identified as a call girl. Wilsberg fears that she will break Manni's heart, which he would like to prevent.

First, Wilsberg goes on the offensive against Walter Grahnke after he learned that he had applied for a major order for the new project that the victim last looked after and that is now being worked on by Manni. Sylvia is urging him to do him a small favor. Although it is against his correctness, he agrees for her sake. Allegedly, Sylvia only wants to make a correction in an application that she had submitted to the building authority. In truth, she secretly manipulates the tender application so that Grahnke's offer is the cheaper and he would get the bid. So that Wilsberg cannot thwart his plan, Grahnke's son kidnaps the victim's niece and puts pressure on Waltraud Rehmer to cancel her assignment to Wilsberg. She does so, but the detective notices that this dismissal is not entirely voluntary and thus learns of the kidnapping. Still at a loss as to how to proceed, his friend Manni appears and complains about his suffering, because he has noticed that Sylvia was at the folder for the tenders and is extremely disappointed. Wilsberg is convinced that they should reverse the exchange of the documents and since Sylvia had deposited the old papers in her car, Wilsberg can steal them there and together with Manni ultimately prevent the manipulation. They also manage to free Rehmer's niece. In doing so, Wilsberg learns that Walter Grahnke, together with his son, had thrown Rehmers in front of the train after an argument.

background
