Wind Beneath My Wings is a 1982 song by Roger Whittaker written by Jeff Silbar and Larry Henley .

history

Silbar and Henley recorded a demo of the song they first gave to musician Bob Montgomery . Bob Montgomery changed the mid-tempo of the song so that one could speak of a ballad, Whittaker got his hands on it in the version, which also appeared on the album of the same name and both flopped in the music charts.

In 1989, Bette Midler's cover version of the song appeared, which was the soundtrack of the film Girlfriends . The release was on March 1, 1989 in the United States and Australia it became a number one hit. At the 1990 Grammy Awards , the song won the Single of the Year and Song of the Year categories . On October 24, 1991, the Recording Industry Association of America awarded the song platinum for sales of one million copies. According to a 2002 UK survey, Bette Midler's version of Wind Beneath My Wings is the most played song at funerals. In 2004 it reached number 44 in the list of AFI's 100 Years… 100 Songs . On the occasion of the Academy Awards 2014 , Midler sang the song live, as well as she sang it in the episode Krusty, the TV star of the Simpsons, together with Krusty, the clown.
