Windhag is a place and a cadastral municipality in the municipality of Waidhofen an der Ybbs in Lower Austria .

The hamlet of Windhag is located northeast of Waidhofen on the ridge of a ridge, the highest point of which is called Schobersberg and which extends to St. Leonhard am Wald .

history

The place emerges from the Passau donation to the Seitenstetten Abbey, which also included the Allhartsberg parish and thus Sonntagberg and Windhag within the large parish of Aschbach . Windhag was first mentioned in a document around 1225.

Culture and sights

  • Catholic parish church Windhag hl. Nikolaus: The church was detached from the Allhartsberg parish in 1474 and founded as a separate parish, but remained closely linked to the Allhartsberg parish in terms of personnel. In 1517 the parish of Windhag was incorporated into the Seitenstetten monastery and for the first time had its own priest. The 14th century church, which was enlarged in 1474, has a statue of St. Nikolaus von Myra from 1708. In the parish there is also the branch church of St. Agidius am Walcherberg, which was consecrated in 1526 and expanded in 1632.

education

A school has existed in Windhag since 1813 and is now run as an elementary school.
