The Noordoostpolder wind farm in the Netherlands consists of several sub-projects. A total of 86 wind turbines were built, 38 of which are on land and 48 more nearshore in front of the dike . The full commissioning took place in June 2017.

With an output of approx. 432 MW, the overall project is  one of the largest wind farms in the Netherlands. On site there are very high wind speeds of over 9 m / s on an annual average. The electricity generation expected per year , the so-called standard energy capacity , is around 1.4 billion  kWh , which, according to the operator, corresponds to the electricity consumption of more than 400,000 Dutch households.

General

From a legal point of view, there are three different wind farms operated by different companies. The history of near-shore systems goes back to 1996, when the Westermeerwind company was founded by two farmers with the aim of building an offshore wind farm in the IJsselmeer . On the other hand, wind energy has been used onshore in the municipality of Noordoostpolder since the late 1980s. A total of 50 older plants with a total of 15 MW are on site, which were built between 1987 and 1991 and will be dismantled after the new plants have been completed. In 2010 it was announced that Enercon would be awarded the contract to build 38 E-126 turbines, each with a nominal output of 7.5 MW. In 2014, Siemens Windenergie finally received the contract to build the near-shore systems.

After completion of the plants, residents of the neighboring communities of Noordoostpolder, Urk and Lemsterland had the opportunity to acquire shares in the project in the form of a community wind farm. According to the operators, 100 permanent jobs were created with the project , while around 300 jobs were created during the construction itself. The total investment for the entire project is given as around one billion euros.

The Westermeerwind project was promoted by the company of the same name. The wind farm is a near-shore wind farm off the coast of the municipality of Noordoostpolder. A total of 48 Siemens STW-3.0-108 gearless wind turbines with a nominal output of 3 MW each and a rotor diameter of 108 meters in water depths of 3 to 7 meters have been built. The hub height of the systems is 79.5 meters, monopiles are used as the foundation structure , but there is no transition piece between the monopile and the tower. In front of the Westermeer dike, two rows of systems are used, which are built 500 and 1100 meters off the coast, respectively, and in front of the Noordermeer dike, a series of systems. The total nominal output of all systems is 144 MW, the standard energy capacity is given as approx. 537 GWh per year.

Due to the proximity to the coast, no transformer platform is used; instead, the feed into the power grid takes place via six different export cables, which are operated with 33 kV, to a transformer station located on land . In order to avoid damage from fishing nets and ship anchors , the cables were each washed approx. 2½ meters deep into the sea bed.

The project, which was awarded to Siemens in July 2014, was built on a turnkey basis and a 15-year maintenance contract was also concluded. The offshore construction work began in March 2015 and all foundations were installed by the end of May. In November 2015, the first turbine started producing electricity. The last turbine was installed at the end of February 2016. At the end of March 2016, the wind farm achieved its full nominal output of 144 MW for the first time. The wind farm was officially commissioned after the trial operation was completed in June 2016 by the Dutch Minister for Economic Affairs, Henk Kamp .

NOP Agrowind

Part of the wind farm of NOP Agrowind and Westermeerwind

Most of the onshore wind farm is operated by NOP Agrowind. A total of 26 Enercon E-126 wind turbines are used, each with a rotor diameter of 127 meters and a nominal output of around 7.5 MW. The turbines were the most powerful wind turbines to date until the Vestas V164-8.0, designed for offshore use, was built in January 2014. The hub height is 135 meters, the total height to the blade tip in the 12 o'clock position 198.5 meters. Part of the systems is located on the Westermeerdeich and on the Noordermeerdeich in close proximity to the near-shore systems, only a few meters away from the dike.

In order to be able to set up the very large turbines as quickly as possible, central warehouses were set up, from which the individual locations were supplied with the tower and turbine components. Self-propelled vehicles were used for this, which can transport up to 160 tons per trip. The first turbine was put into operation in August 2014, and the wind farm is due to be completed in 2016 [obsolete] . The annual standard work capacity is around 600 GWh.

Zuidwester

Twelve Enercon E-126 turbines with a total nominal output of 90 MW are also used in the Zuidwester wind farm. As part of a repowering project, they are replacing 50 300 kW “Windmaster” turbines with a total nominal output of 15 MW that were built there in 1987. As in the northern parts of the Noordoostpolder wind farm, the turbines are located directly on the dike. The official laying of the foundation stone took place in May 2014. A single E-126 can generate as much electricity as all 50 systems in the original wind farm combined. All twelve foundations had been completed by April 2015, at which point a tower had also been erected. In November 2015, the first system fed electricity into the grid. The wind farm was fully commissioned in June 2017. The operator is Innogy .
