Life

Winfried Barta was born and raised in Dresden. In February 1945 he witnessed the air raids on Dresden . After graduating from high school in December 1946, he moved to the West. Since the rush to the big universities was too great at the time, he first studied philosophy and art history at the Philosophical-Theological Academy in Paderborn . Later he was able to switch to the University of Munich . Soon afterwards he had to break off his studies because he was without financial support due to the currency reform and the division of Germany . He then worked in an accounting department. At the same time he took singing lessons. Ferenc Fricsay then accepted the baritone Barta into the choir of the Bavarian State Opera . In 1957 he also began to study Egyptology, ancient history and ethnology at the University of Munich .

Barta did his doctorate in 1962 under Hans Wolfgang Müller on the ancient Egyptian list of victims. Then he was employed as a research assistant at the Egyptian State Collection until 1965. In the meantime he traveled to Egypt , Greece and Italy on a scholarship from the German Archaeological Institute (DAI) . After being employed at the State Collection, he became an assistant at the Institute for Egyptology and Coptology at the University of Munich. In 1967 he completed his habilitation there with a thesis on the victim formula. In 1971 he became a scientific councilor and in 1972 an adjunct professor. He received a call to Columbia University , which he did not accept. After Hans Wolfgang Müller retired , he became a full professor and head of the Institute for Egyptology and Coptic Studies. He was twice dean of the Philosophical Faculty and a member of the Senate of the University of Munich.

Barta's fields of research were the Egyptian religion , royalty, literature , language , chronology and time calculation. He focused on, among other things, the cult of the dead of kings, the names of kings, the statute of kings and the coronation rituals, the world of gods, religious literature and the calendar system. From the 1980s onwards, he paid greater attention to linguistics.

Barta died on October 27, 1992 after a long illness.
